Baccarat has a reputation for being complicated, but you make exactly one decision per hand. Learning how to play baccarat means learning which hand to back and how the dealer’s fixed baccarat rules play out after that.
Key Takeaways
- You pick Banker, Player or Tie before the cards come out, and the dealer does the rest.
- Cards count from 0 to 9, and a hand keeps only the last digit of its total.
- Power.Win’s baccarat lobby offers live dealer tables that deal a real shoe on camera, plus instant tables you can play at your own pace.
- A fixed third-card rule decides every draw, so there’s no hit-or-stand choice to get wrong.
- The three main bets cost very different amounts over time, and the one with the biggest payout isn’t the cheapest.
These are the baccarat card values, with a few example hands showing how a total is counted.
| Card | Point value | Example hand | Baccarat total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ace | 1 point | A + 7 | 8 (a natural) |
| 2 to 9 | Face value | 4 + 2 | 6 |
| 10, jack, queen, king | 0 points | K + 9 | 9 (a natural) |
| Any hand over 9 | Keep the last digit only | 7 + 8 = 15 | 5 |
| Three-card hand | Keep the last digit only | 5 + 6 + 3 = 14 | 4 |
This baccarat rules chart shows when the Banker hand draws a third card. It depends on Banker’s two-card total and on the third card Player drew, where 0 stands for any 10 or face card.
| Banker’s two-card total | If Player stood on 6 or 7 | Banker draws if Player’s third card is | Banker stands if Player’s third card is |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0, 1 or 2 | Draws | Any card (0 to 9) | Never stands |
| 3 | Draws | 0 to 7, or 9 | 8 |
| 4 | Draws | 2 to 7 | 0, 1, 8 or 9 |
| 5 | Draws | 4 to 7 | 0 to 3, 8 or 9 |
| 6 | Stands | 6 or 7 | 0 to 5, 8 or 9 |
| 7 | Stands | Never draws | Any card |
| 8 or 9 | A natural: both hands stand | Not dealt | Not dealt |
Drawing rules from the Wizard of Odds baccarat rules page. Player’s own rule is simpler: draw on 0 to 5, stand on 6 or 7.
What is baccarat?
Baccarat is a card game in which you bet on which of two hands, Banker or Player, will finish closer to 9, or on the two tying. Neither hand belongs to you or the dealer. They’re just names for the two sides of the table.
You don’t hold cards or make choices after the bet. The dealer turns the cards, applies the fixed drawing rules and pays the winning side.
The game is big business in land-based casinos. According to UNLV’s Center for Gaming Research, baccarat has taken more Nevada table win than blackjack in most years since 2010. In 2025 it took 36.47% of statewide table win, against 30.37% for blackjack.
Punto banco
Punto banco is the version of baccarat almost every casino deals today, and it’s the version this guide explains. “Punto” is Player and “banco” is Banker.
Mini baccarat
Mini baccarat uses the same rules as big-table baccarat, but the dealer turns over every card, so the game moves much faster. The odds are the same as the big table when the deck count matches, according to the Wizard of Odds.
What are the rules of baccarat?
The rules of baccarat come down to six steps: bet, deal two cards to each hand, total them, check for a natural, apply the third-card rule, and pay the hand closest to 9.
- Place your bet on Banker, Player or Tie before the betting window closes. Some tables add optional side bets.
- The dealer deals two cards to the Player hand and two to the Banker hand.
- Each hand is totalled using the card values, keeping only the last digit.
- Check for a natural. If either hand totals 8 or 9 on its first two cards, both hands stand and the hand is settled.
- Apply the third-card rule. Player acts first, then Banker follows the chart.
- Compare and pay. The total closer to 9 wins. If the totals match, it’s a tie, and Banker and Player bets are returned to you.
These baccarat casino rules are the same at a physical table and on a screen, and the dealer has no discretion at any step.
Worked example: one full hand
Say you put $20 on Banker. Player is dealt 7 and 5, which makes 12, so the total is 2. Banker is dealt a king and a 5, a total of 5.
- Player draws, because 2 is between 0 and 5. The card is a 4, so Player finishes on 6.
- Banker checks the chart. Banker has 5 and Player’s third card was a 4, so Banker draws. The card is a 3, and Banker finishes on 8.
- Banker wins, 8 against 6. Your $20 Banker bet wins $19 after the 5% commission, and you get $39 back in total.
How do baccarat card values work?
In baccarat, aces count as 1, cards 2 to 9 count at face value, and tens and face cards count as 0. You add the cards up and keep only the last digit, so no hand can ever go over 9.
This is the part that confuses beginners, because baccarat has no bust. A 7 and an 8 make 15, and the hand is simply worth 5. A queen and a king make 0, the lowest total a hand can have.
If you’re a beginner learning how to play baccarat, remember that a third card can lower a total as well as raise it. A 6 plus a 7 is 3, and a third card of 8 turns it into 1.
When does a third card get drawn in baccarat?
A third card is drawn only when neither hand has a natural 8 or 9. Player draws on a total of 0 to 5 and stands on 6 or 7. Banker then follows the chart at the top of this page, based on its own total and Player’s third card.
These are the baccarat draw rules, sometimes called the hit rules or dealing rules. The dealer can’t bend them.
- Player rule: draw on 0 to 5, stand on 6 or 7.
- Banker rule when Player stood: draw on 0 to 5, stand on 6 or 7.
- Banker rule when Player drew: Banker’s decision depends on its own total and on Player’s third card, as the chart sets out. Banker 0 to 2 always draws, and Banker 7 always stands.
Each hand holds three cards at most. Once both hands have acted, the totals are compared and the round is over.
What bets can you place in baccarat?
You can bet on Banker, Player or Tie, and some tables add side bets such as Player Pair or Banker Pair. The main bets pay differently, and that difference is what separates them.
- Player pays 1:1 when the Player hand wins.
- Banker pays 1:1 minus a 5% commission, which the Wizard of Odds describes as 19 to 20.
- Tie pays 8:1 at almost all casinos. Banker and Player bets push when a tie lands.
- Side bets are optional extras on things like a pair in the first two cards. Each table sets its own list and payouts.
Some variants change the payouts. Tables such as Fortune 6 and Super 8 alter the Banker payout on certain totals instead of charging the standard commission, so open each table’s paytable before you bet.
How do you play baccarat with the lowest house edge?
You play baccarat with the lowest house edge by betting on Banker, which costs about 1.06% of each bet over time on an eight-deck table, against 14.36% for a Tie paying 8:1 (Wizard of Odds). The choice is that simple: back the cheaper bet and skip the Tie.
No staking pattern, including the 1-3-2-6 pattern, changes that edge. You still lose around $1.06 for every $100 you put on Banker over the long run, and a single session can swing far wider. For the full numbers on every bet, including side bets and why Banker has its edge, read our guide to baccarat odds explained.
How do you play baccarat online with crypto?
To play baccarat online with crypto, you open a casino’s baccarat lobby, pick a live dealer or instant table, and place bets from a crypto balance.
On Power.Win, the baccarat lobby lists 13 baccarat titles, with live dealer and instant play options. Variants include Classic, Squeeze, Turbo, Mega, Hi-Lo, Big Small, Fortune 6 and Super 8.
Before you take a seat, check three things on the table itself:
- Table limits. Each table sets its own minimum and maximum bet, shown in its info panel.
- The bet timer. Live tables close betting on a countdown. Instant tables deal when you’re ready.
- The paytable. Commission, Tie payout and any side bets are listed there, and they vary between variants.
Your balance stays in crypto, and Power.Win doesn’t use fiat payment rails. How deposits and withdrawals move is covered step by step in our guide to deposit and withdraw on Power.Win. If you play baccarat online for real money, the same 1.06% Banker edge applies as at a land-based table with the same rules.

How do live baccarat tables work, and what should the casino show?
Live baccarat tables deal physical cards from a real shoe in a studio and stream every hand to your screen, while the software settles your bet on the result. A casino running them should show its licence, who supplies the tables and the tools you can use to limit your play.
Live dealer baccarat comes in a few presentation styles. The rules stay the same in each one:
- Streamed shoe: the dealer draws each card on camera, so you watch the hand being dealt.
- Squeeze: the dealer bends or peels the cards slowly before revealing them. It’s theatre, and the cards were set once they left the shoe.
- Speed or Turbo: shorter betting windows and a faster deal, so more hands, and more total wagering, fit into each hour.
Every baccarat table on Power.Win, live and instant, comes from certified third party providers. None of them is provably fair in the seed-checking sense. Power.Win’s provably fair games are its six PWR Originals, and baccarat isn’t among them. With a baccarat table, you’re relying on the provider’s certification, not on checking a seed yourself.

Online gambling rules vary by country and state, so a live table being on the screen doesn’t settle whether you may play it. Check your local law, and the countries Power.Win’s terms say it doesn’t serve, before you sit down.
The responsible gambling tools matter most on fast live tables. Power.Win offers deposit limits, wagering limits and self-exclusion, and you can set them before your first hand. If you’re comparing live lobbies more broadly, our guide to the best live dealer casino with crypto lists what each one should publish.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the rule of 3 in baccarat?
There’s no official rule by that name, and it’s used for three different things. Two are real rules: a Banker hand of 3 draws unless Player’s third card is an 8, and no hand ever holds more than 3 cards. The third meaning is a streak-betting pattern, which doesn’t change the house edge.
Does the dealer make any choices in baccarat?
No. Every draw follows the fixed third-card rule, with Player drawing on 0 to 5, so the dealer only deals, totals and pays. You don’t choose either, apart from the bet you place before the cards come out.
What is squeeze baccarat?
Squeeze baccarat is standard punto banco where the cards are revealed slowly, bent or peeled on camera. The squeeze adds suspense but not odds, because each card was set once it left the shoe. Power.Win’s lobby lists a Squeeze Baccarat table.
What happens to your bet when Banker and Player tie?
Banker and Player bets push, so your stake comes back with no win or loss. Only a Tie bet wins, paying 8:1 at almost all casinos according to the Wizard of Odds. Check the paytable, because a few tables pay 9:1.
Does a natural 9 beat a natural 8?
Yes. When both hands show a natural, neither draws and the higher total wins, so a natural 9 beats a natural 8. Two naturals of the same total are a tie, and Banker and Player bets push.

Take the Lead, Gamble Responsibly
Knowing how baccarat works tells you what each bet costs over time. It doesn’t change who holds the edge, and the house keeps it on every hand you play. Set a budget for the session before the first card, treat it as the price of the entertainment, and walk away once it’s spent.
Power.Win’s responsible gambling tools let you set daily, weekly or monthly deposit limits, add wagering limits, and take a self-exclusion break from three months to five years or indefinitely. It also links independent help, including a BeGambleAware self-check, for when play stops being fun.
